Mohamed Moustahsane will remain Interim President of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) until at least June 20 after the organisation's Extraordinary Congress was postponed by three months because of the coronavirus.

In a letter to Executive Committee members, seen by insidethegames, the Moroccan - whose mandate had been due to expire on March 29 - confirmed the Congress would stay in Budapest but would be held on June 20 instead of March 20.

Among the key decisions set to be made at the Congress is a vote on changes to AIBA's statutes, while the process for the Presidential election could also become clearer.

Under the current constitution, Moustahsane has to leave the position on March 29, exactly 365 days since his election as Interim President following the resignation of Gafur Rakhimov.

But his mandate has been extended following the decision to allow him to continue until the postponed Congress takes place, made by Executive Committee members in a mail vote this week.

It effectively means AIBA, suspended as the Olympic governing body for the sport by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last June, has breached its own constitution by not having an election for a permanent President within the timeframe outlined in the document.

The Congress, initially scheduled for Lausanne before it was switched to Budapest, has been moved amid concerns over the virus, which has killed 3,219 people and infected 94,170 worldwide.

Hungary has not reported any cases of the virus, officially known as COVID-19, but countries are beginning to enforce travel restrictions and bans on mass gatherings of people in order to curb its spread.

Moustahsane revealed that AIBA received a letter from the Hungarian Boxing Federation asking for a postponement "due to concerns raised by the Hungarian Health Authorities with respect to the evolution of the coronavirus outbreak and the risk related to the presence at the Extraordinary Congress of delegates from countries 'at risk".

"With the latest development of the coronavirus outbreak in Europe, many Governments are considering restrictive measures including cancellation of events in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, bearing in mind that such measures and recommendations are in constant evolution," Moustahsane said in a statement.

The postponement delays a process considered vital if AIBA is to regain recognition from the IOC.

AIBA's leadership hope the new statutes, being devised by a Reform Commission, will be passed at the Congress.

The embattled organisation has been stripped of any involvement in the boxing tournament at Tokyo 2020 and its status will not be considered until after this year's Olympics.
