Federica Brignone of Italy claimed the Alpine combined crystal globe as the International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Skiing World Cup event in La Thuile was cancelled due to heavy snowfall.

After inclement weather caused the final Alpine combined race of the season to be cancelled, Brignone was given the crystal globe as standings leader.

She had triumphed in the Austrian resort of Altenmarkt and Crans-Montana in Switzerland this season, giving her 200 points.

Swiss skier Wendy Holdener was second on 125, while Ester Ledecka of the Czech Republic was third on 100.

Tomorrow's Super-G race has also been cancelled.

The event in northern Italy had gone ahead despite the outbreak of coronavirus in the region, with competition taking place in front of limited spectators.

World Cup action is set to resume in the Swedish resort of Åre from March 12 to 14.

Brignone also leads the overall World Cup standings with 1378 points, 153 points in front of American three-time overall champion Mikaela Shiffrin, who has been absent from competition since the start of February.

Slovakia's Petra Vlhova is third on 1189.
