Egyptian duo Omar Assar and Dina Meshref did not drop a game as they secured Africa's sole mixed doubles table tennis place at Tokyo 2020.

Having both already qualified for singles and doubles events, the pair completed their hat-tricks in style in Tunis.

The Egyptians first beat Ahmed Djamal and Rahma Houssein of Djibouti 11-4, 11-2, 11-2, 11-2 in the quarter-finals.

A win against Thameur Mamia and Fadwa Garci of hosting Tunisia followed, with the final score 1-6, 11-6, 11-8, 11-2.

Nigeria's Segun Toriola and Olufunke Oshonaike awaited in the final, a day after Oshonaike booked an Olympic spot in the women's singles competition.

Assar and Meshref were too strong, winning 11-6, 11-6, 11-7, 11-2.

Toriola, 45, had been hoping to qualify for his eighth Olympic Games and said afterwards that he would not attempt to reach Paris 2024.

He is, however, "satisfied with my career as it has been fantastic."

The mixed doubles contest brought the 2020 African Singles and Mixed Doubles Olympic Qualification Tournament to a close.

Senegal's Ibrahima Diaw, Tunisia's Adam Hmam, Olajide Omotayo of Nigeria and Algerian Larbi Bouriah had earlier booked Olympic spots in the men's singles competition.

Nigerians Offiong Edem and Oshonaike, Cameroon's Sarah Hanffou and Garci are Tokyo-bound for the women's singles.
