Argentinian javelin thrower Braian Toledo has been killed in a motorcycle crash, months before he was set to represent his country at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The 26-year-old, who finished tenth at Rio 2016, died in an accident approximately 30 miles from Buenos Aires, according to British newspaper the Daily Star.

Argentine Olympic Committee President Gerardo Werthein was among those to pay tribute to Toledo, who won the inaugural Youth Olympic javelin title after carrying the country's flag at the Opening Ceremony.

"We have lost a great person...an extraordinary athlete, humble, generous, always supportive of others," Werthein said in a statement.

"We will miss you very much.

"We will pray for you.

"My condolences to the whole family in this heartbreaking and sad moment."

Toledo competed at the 2012 Olympics in London at the age of 18 and finished 30th in the javelin event.

He won gold at the 2017 South American Championships and was 28th in the javelin final at that year's World Championships in London.

Toledo's best Olympic result came at Rio 2016, where he placed 10th.
