World Taekwondo has confirmed the Asian Olympic qualification tournament has been moved from Wuxi in China to Jordan’s capital Amman due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The continental qualifier had been to take place in Wuxi from April 10 to 11.

The two-day competition has become the latest sporting event to be impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.

At least 78,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported by authorities, with 2,362 deaths having been reported worldwide.

China has had more than 76,000 cases of the virus, which has been given the official title of COVID-19 by the World Health Organization.

The virus originated in China, with the country now subject of travel restrictions from several nations.

The restrictions and the ongoing outbreak have forced sporting events to either be moved from China or cancelled.

World Taekwondo has been the latest organisation forced to remove its event from China.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue confirmed Amman had stepped in to replace Wuxi as host of the Asian qualifier in a letter to member national associations.

“First, I sincerely wish that you and your loved ones are well, especially amid the global Covid-19 outbreak,” Choue wrote.

“Please kindly extend our wishes to the athletes and officials of the World Taekwondo Family in your respective countries.

“Starting from today in Rabat, the African qualification tournament for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will begin in earnest.

“This will kick off a series of qualification tournaments in the other continental unions, with Gold Coast, San Jose, Amann and Milan.

“I wish to extend my heartfelt appreciation for the organisers of the continental qualification tournaments.

“I am also excited that - for the first time in World Taekwondo’s illustrious history - we will feature qualification tournaments for the Paralympic Games.”

The Asian continental qualifier will see 16 quota places earned by athletes, with two on offer in each of the eight Olympic weight categories.

Amman has already stepped in to host the Asia and Oceania boxing qualification event for Tokyo 2020.

“World Taekwondo decided to cancel the establishment of the qualifiers in the Chinese city of Wuxi due to the coronavirus, so that the Asian Confederation opens the door for candidacy to the countries that wish to host,” the Jordan Olympic Committee said.

“Jordan and Iran submitted two files for hosting request.

“The AFC then conducted an electronic voting process for the selection of the host country by the members of the Executive Bureau, to be chosen by Jordan to host this event.”

Numerous events, including the World Indoor Athletics Championships and Olympic qualifiers in sports such as football, have been either postponed, cancelled or relocated from China due to the outbreak.
