The Professional Bowling Association (PBA) have announced the team-size for the 2020 Weber Cup will expand from four players to five.

Chris Barnes and Dominic Barrett will reprise their roles as team captains of Team USA and Team Europe respectively.

Barnes guided Team USA to an 18-14 victory at last year's edition of the event, which took place in Las Vegas.

It marked the first time the Ryder Cup styled team bowling event had taken place in the United States.

The competition will now alternate between the US and Europe, with Leicester in England staging the 2020 event.

Competition will take place from June 5 to 7 at the Morningside Arena in the city.

The decision to expand the team size for the event was confirmed by Matchroom Sport and the PBA, who claim the move will create more exciting matches and lead to strategic thinking from the two captains.

"Expanding the teams to five players each is a significant step in the right direction for the BetVictor Weber Cup," said Emily Frazer, Matchroom Sport's chief operating officer.

"This allows both the players and fans to see the full potential of the event format and its competitiveness.

"The BetVictor Weber Cup is a team event and it is built for five players on each squad; this will open the door for more exciting, tense games, less repeated matches and strategic thinking from our captains."

Two members of each team will earn automatic selection via the PBA Tour Points List.

Points from 10 events, held from January to the USBC Masters in March, will be included.

The final two spots on each team will be chosen by the captains.

"We're thrilled to be partnering with the BetVictor Weber Cup for a second consecutive year and to be giving our PBA players the kind of international exposure they deserve," said Colie Edison, PBA chief executive.

"The BetVictor Weber Cup, much like the Ryder Cup in golf, is a transatlantic rivalry that ups the ante for the sport and gives our fans even more reason to root for their favourite players."

Organisers have confirmed the prize fund for the event has increased to $75,000 (£57,500/€69,100), with members of the winning team earning $10,000 (£7,600/€9,200) each.

The runners-up will receive $5,000 (£3,800/€4,600) per player.
