Russia won three of the five gold medals on offer on the penultimate day of competition at the European Wrestling Championships in Rome.

Champions were crowned in men's freestyle at the following weight categories - 57kg, 65kg, 70kg, 79kg and 97kg.

In the men's 57kg category the gold medal went to Azamat Tuskaev of Russia who defeated Turkey's Suleyman Atli 3-1.

There were two bronze medals handed out in each category for the winners of the other two medal matches - at 57kg these went to Stevan Micic and Horst Lehr.

At 65kg gold went to another Russian in Kurban Shiraev who beat Niurgin Skriabin of Belarus 5-0.

Bronzes went to Erik Arushanian and Ali Rahimzade.

The next medals handed out were in the 70kg category, with gold going to Poland's Magomedmurad Gadzhiev who defeated Aghahuseyn Mustafayev 2-0.

Bronzes went to Mihail Sava and Haydar Yavuz.

The penultimate category of the day was the 79kg were gold went to Belarus's Mahamedkhabib Kadzimahamedeau who defeated Magomed Ramazanov 10-3.

Bronze medals in that category went to Jabrayil Hasanov and Vasyl Mykhailov.

The final medals of the day were handed out in the 97kg category with Russia's third gold of the day going to Abdulrashid Sadulaev who overcame Albert Saritov 6-0.

Bronze medals in that category went to Elizbar Odikadze and Abraham Conyedo from the host nation Italy.

The concluding day of competition tomorrow features more finals, including an eagerly anticipated contest at 74kg between two former world champions - Frank Chamizo of Italy and Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov of Russia.
