The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has cancelled four tournaments due to be held in Asia because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The four Challenge Cup of Asia events - two in Thailand and two in the Philippines - were scheduled to take place later this month.

The 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 Challenge Cup of Asia and 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 Challenge Cup of Asia Division I were both set to be held in Bangkok from February 10 to 15, but will no longer take place.

The 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s Challenge Cup of Asia and 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s Challenge Cup of Asia Division I were likewise set to run side-by-side in Manila from February 23 to 28, but will no longer take place.

In addition, it has also been announced that the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division II Group B, originally to be hosted in the Chinese city of Tianjin in March, has been moved to Sofia in Bulgaria.

As well as Bulgaria and China, Australia, Croatia, The Netherlands and Spain will be taking part in the group.

There have been more than 17,000 cases of coronavirus in China, with 361 people having lost their lives.

That means the death toll has overtaken that of the 2003 SARS outbreak.

Thailand so far has 19 confirmed cases and the Philippines two.

The virus has spread to at least 21 other countries and has had a big impact on sport in Asia, with football, boxing, skiing, golf and diving just some of the other sports to have had to cancel or relocate events.
