A new worldwide talent development programme led by Arsène Wenger and aimed at reducing Europe's football dominance has been launched by FIFA.

FIFA claims the project, the first to be overseen by the former Arsenal manager since his appointment as chief of global football development in November, will help address the gulf between some countries and the top nations in the sport.

It has been launched to improve coaching and enhance talent identification across the world.

All 211 members of FIFA will be offered an expert analysis of the "various areas of their high-performance ecosystem" in both men's and women's football as part of the project.

This will include all national teams, domestic leagues, scouting projects and academies.

A report will be produced for each country to identify areas of improvement, with FIFA promising to implement "tailor-made technical programmes" alongside the member association from 2021.

"The difference in the level of play between Europe and the rest of the world has become bigger," Wenger said.

"In many countries, the focus of the association is mainly on the senior national team, but this national team is always the consequence of football development across the country.

"We need more youth competitions to identify talent, offer them a pathway and develop coaching.

"Within the next six to eight months, we will have a good overview of what is needed everywhere in both men’s and women’s football, and then we will respond both online and offline with a team of experts to help develop football to the highest level and to have a lasting impact."

All four semi-finalists at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia were European, while the last four men's tournaments have all been won by countries from the continent.
