West Indies progressed to the fifth-place play-off at the International Cricket Council Under-19 World Cup by beating hosts South Africa in Potchefstroom.

Both teams were seeking to bounce back from quarter-final defeats at the tournament, which ended their respective bids for the title.

South Africa won the toss at the JB Marks Oval and elected to bat, but their batting line-up struggled during their innings.

Levert Manje produced the strongest resistance to the West Indies bowling attack by scoring 43, but he was one of only two players to score over 20 runs.

South Africa were ultimately bowled out for 143, with three West Indies bowlers earning two wickets apiece.

West Indies made a stuttering start to their run chase in the 50 overs per side match, as they were reduced to 11-2.

Captain Kimani Melius steadied their nerves as the opener scored 29 runs.

Antonio Morris and Matthew Patrick also contributed with 26 and 25 runs respectively, which helped the West Indies to reach 147-6 to win the tie.

West Indies will face either Australia or Afghanistan in the fifth-place play-off, with their Super League semi-final taking place tomorrow.

Placement matches also continued at the tournament today, with Canada beating the United Arab Emirates by four wickets to finish 13th.

Nigeria earned an eight-wicket victory over Japan to end their campaign on a high by finishing 15th.

The build-up continues for the Super League semi-finals, with India and Pakistan meeting on Tuesday (February 4).

The winner will meet either New Zealand or Bangladesh, who will compete in the second semi-final on Thursday (February 6).
