Japan edged out Aussie Spirit to book their place in the semi-finals of the Softball Australia Pacific Cup in style in Sydney.

A 4-3 victory for Japan, seeded second in the world and favourites for the tournament, ensured they finished top of the round-robin group at Blacktown International Sportspark.

Japan also completed the group phase with a 100 per cent record after they overcame Australia A 2-0 in their first match of the day.

The Japanese side will take on Italy, who finished the opening stage of the competition in fourth, in the semi-finals tomorrow.

Italy progressed to the last four despite a 3-0 defeat to Australia A.

Mexico ended the round-robin stage in second place after enjoying a perfect penultimate day, where they recorded two victories.

A 7-3 comeback win over New Zealand followed a 6-3 demolition of Chinese Taipei.

Mexico will face Aussie Spirit for a place in the final tomorrow.
