The 24-year-old exited the ongoing Australian Open on Monday (January 27), losing to the men's world number one, Rafael Nadal of Spain, in the fourth round. 

Despite this, Kyrgios confirmed he is aiming to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, according to 7news. 

"I want to play just as much the last time the Olympics were around," he said.

"I feel like if I’m there, I’ve got a genuine shot at winning a medal.

"I’d love to be there with the other athletes representing Australia."

Kyrgios withdrew from Rio 2016 after an ongoing row with the AOC, claiming he had been a victim of “unwarranted attacks” from the organisation. 

The Australian Chef de Mission for Rio 2016, Kitty Chiller, had threatened Kyrgios and team-mate Bernard Tomic with the possibility of being axed from the team if their behaviour failed to improve.

Kyrgios had been involved in a number of controversial incidents in the build-up to the Games, having also received a suspended 28-day ban for derogatory remarks made about the girlfriend of Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka during a Rogers Cup match in August 2015. 

Although the player is still considered somewhat controversial, AOC President John Coates revealed he wanted Kyrgios to play at Tokyo 2020. 

"If he wants to be there, he’s certainly good enough to be there, and we would be proud to have him as an Olympian," Coates said, as reported by  The Sydney Morning Herald. 

"We would be very happy to have someone of his ability on our Olympic team."

Kyrgios is currently ranked 26th in the world. 

He pledged money towards Australia's bushfire relief fund for every ace he served at the Australian Open. 

A number of other tennis players have recently made their intentions for Tokyo 2020 clear, with Roger Federer of Switzerland, Simona Halep of Romania and Naomi Osaka of Japan all confirming they would like to compete at the Games. 

Competition is scheduled to run from July 25 to August 2 at Ariake Tennis Park.
