Ugandan Olympians from as far back as Rome 1960 gathered for a reunion in Kampala.

The event was the first of its kind and was held at the Uganda Olympic Committee's (UOC) headquarters.

Twenty-eight Olympians attended in all, with some seeing each other for the first time in years.

Among those present was hurdler Mary Musani, Uganda's first female Olympian who competed at the Tokyo 1964 Games.

UOC President William Blick, who is a member of the International Olympic Committee, handed out certificates and badges to those in attendance.

It is now hoped that the event will take place twice a year, with support for retired athletes a topic due to be discussed.

The Uganda Olympians Association, which is a member of the World Olympians Association, arranged the gathering.

"I planned for a brief stay," said Blick to New Vision

"But I must confess I was also moved by the presence of such a wide spectrum of stars."

Uganda won the second Olympic gold medal in its history when Stephen Kiprotich won the men's marathon at London 2012.

The country's other champion is 400 metres hurdler John Akii-Bua, who triumphed at Munich 1972.
