Scotty James has won the men's snowboard superpipe on day one of the Winter X Games in Aspen, United States.

It's the Australian's third Winter X gold, having triumphed in 2017 and last year.

The competition format at Buttermilk was slightly new, with a 30-minute jam session in the eight-rider final, as opposed to the traditional three-run format.

But it didn't affect James, who won his 10th straight contest, holding off Japan's Yuto Totsuka, with Switzerland's Jan Scherrer taking bronze for his first X Games medal.

"The feeling never gets old - winning is such an amazing feeling," James said.

"So much hard work goes into this, so to do it here at X Games is very, very special to me.

"X Games is a pinnacle for us.

"I dreamt of getting one X Games medal and I've added another one to my collection."

The other final on day one of competition was the Pacifico women's snowboard big air, with X Games debutant Miyabi Onitsuka of Japan taking gold, heading a totally Japanese podium.

But it wasn’t too much of a surprise, considering Onitsuka is the youngest snowboarder to win an FIS World Cup event, at the age of 16.

Kokomo Murase, who is just 15-years-old, took silver, with the bronze going to Reira Iwabuchi.

Tomorrow sees finals in the snowmobile freestyle, women’s ski big air and men’s ski big air.
