England kept their hopes alive of reaching the final of the inaugural Netball Nations Cup with a hard-fought 58-54 victory over South Africa in Birmingham tonight.

England trailed 26-25 at half-time at Arena Birmingham but came back strongly in the second-half following a number of changes by head coach Jess Thirlby.

Having lost 64-48 to world champions New Zealand on Sunday (January 20), England knew they needed a victory if they were to give themselves a chance of reaching the final at the Copper Box Arena on Saturday (January 26).

"We were getting exposed in the first half and had to press the reset button," Thirlby said.

"We spoke at half-time how we needed to play smarter but at this level you can't just play with your heart, you have to play with your head too."

In the first match of the day, New Zealand posted a second victory in this tournament as they beat Jamaica 71-45.

Shooter Maia Wilson excelled for the Silver Ferns and was deservedly named the player of the match.

She shot at 93 per cent, putting up 42 of her 45 attempts.

England are now due to meet Jamaica and New Zealand play at South Africa in London on Saturday.

The final and third place playoff are then due to take place the following day.
