Home player Anthony Ginting has made tomorrow's men’s final at the Badminton World Federation Indonesia Masters in Jakarta, after defeating Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen.

Ginting had the crowd at Istora Gelora Bung Karno in a ferment, as he won 22-20, 21-11 against the 2017 world champion and Rio 2016 bronze medallist in this BWF World Tour Super 500 event.

Axelsen’s compatriot and defending champion Anders Antonsen, who had beaten home player Jonatan Christie in the previous round, will be Ginting's opponent in the final.

Antonsen earned a 21-9, 21-14 win over unseeded Hong Kong player Lee Cheuk Yiu in the second semi-final.

In the women's singles, 19-year-old Chinese player Wang Zhiyi, who had reached her first semi-final in a top-tier event, lost 21-12, 23-21 to 21-year-old fourth-seeded Ratchanok Intanon.

The Thai player’s opponent in tomorrow's final will be Spain's Rio 2016 champion Carolina Marin, a potent force again following the anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in the final of last year's BWF Indonesia Masters.

Marin, unseeded following her long absence until she returned to top class action last September, beat China's sixth-seeded He Bingjiao 21-11, 21-19.

She has yet to climb back into the seeded positions, presenting the possibility of heavyweight clashes in the early rounds of tournaments.

Action in Jakarta, which is hosting the second tournament of the BWF World Tour season, continues tomorrow.
