Defending title holder Francisco Friedrich of Germany registered his second World Cup win of the season at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) two-man bobsleigh in French resort La Plagne.

Alongside brakeman Alexander Schueller, they took gold in 1min 58.52sec, edging out Latvia's Oskars Kibermanis and Matiss Miknis - just 0.26 seconds behind. 

Switzerland's Michael Vogt and Sandro Michel celebrated the pilot's first podium finish in third, in a time of 1:58.86.

After three of eight races this season, Friedrich is on top of the overall standings with 660 points, with Kibermanis in second on 594.  

Olympic Champion Justin Kripps of Canada with 544 points, who finished 10th in La Plagne, is in third overall.

In the two-woman bobsleigh, it was a great day for Germany, taking home gold and bronze medals. 

Youth Olympic champion pilot Laura Nolte and brake athlete Deborah Levi topped the podium in a time 2:01.43 over their two heats, with compatriots Stephanie Schneider and Leonie Fiebig taking bronze in 2:01.65.

Canadians Christine De Bruin and Kristen Bujnowski split the Europeans to take home silver, in 2:01.64.

During heat one, Nolte and Levi set a new benchmark time for La Plagne with 1:00.67. 

In the final heat, they tied the starting record set by team mates Schneider and Fiebig to top the World Cup podium for the first time in their careers. 

American Kaillie Humphries continues to lead the overall standings in the 2019/2020 BMW/IBSF World Cup on 834 points. 

The 2010 and 2014 Olympic champion finished fourth in La Plagne. 

Second place at the midway point of the World Cup season is held by Schneider on 827. 

Current Olympic champion, world champion and defending World Cup title holder Mariama Jamanka, also of Germany (770), finished fifth in La Plagne and is third overall.

Tomorrow sees the four-man bobsleigh competition.
