Jordan made an ideal start to their quest for a Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games place, winning their opening qualifying match at the Asian Football Confederation Under-23 Championship in Thailand.

A 2-1 win against North Korea means Jordan have pole position after day one of action in Group D, in a tournament that offers three places for the men's Olympic competition.

Omar Hani, a midfielder currently playing for leading Cypriot side APOEL, scored the decisive goal for Jordan in the 74th minute at Biriram Stadium, putting them 2-0 up after a penalty in added first-half time by Mohammed Bani Atieh.

The North Koreans pulled a goal back in the 91st minute through Ryang Hyon-ju.

In the earlier Group D match, Vietnam drew 0-0 with United Arab Emirates.

The competition continues tomorrow with the second round of Group A matches, with Bahrain - beaten 5-0 by the hosts in their opening game - meeting Iraq, who drew 1-1 with Australia at the Thammasat Stadium, Rangsit.

Thailand will meet Australia in the second of the day's games, at the Rajamangala Stadium in the Thai capital of Bangkok.

As Japan have already qualified for Tokyo 2020 as hosts, the remaining three semi-finalists will book their Olympic places should they reach the last four.

If not, the two finalists and the winner of the third-place playoff will advance.

The top two teams in each group will reach the quarter-finals, with the final scheduled for January 26 in Bangkok.

Men's Olympic football features under-23 sides, although three overage players are allowed in the final squads.
