Swedish freestyle skier Jennie-Lee Burmansson is relishing competing at her first Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, around 16 months after tearing her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL).

The 17-year-old has already reached a women’s slopestyle Olympic final at Pyeongchang 2018, won the 2017-2018 International Ski Federation Freestyle Skiing World Cup slopestyle crystal globe and claimed a big air gold medal at the Winter X Games Europe in Norway's capital Oslo in 2018.

Disaster struck when she tore her ACL in competition in New Zealand in September 2018, but Burmansson has used her year out injured to work on her physical strength, mental capacity and technique.

"It was pretty tough being injured, not being able to ski for a whole year," Burmansson said.

"It was a new learning experience.

"I had to spend a lot of time on my body and my mind.

"I learned so much even though I wasn’t skiing.

"I feel so much stronger now.

"The thing that kept me going was the thought of being able to do new tricks when I got back, especially because I am much stronger."

Burmansson feels her absence has made her a better athlete.

"I am just getting back on skis now and that feels great," she said.

"I was a bit slippery on my first run back, but after a couple I had it.

"It was like being re-born.

"I am a lot more cautious in what I do, for sure.

"I am not just doing things super quick - I think about what I am doing now before I do it.

"But there is no fear."

As a 15-year-old, Burmansson finished eighth in the women's slopestyle final at Pyeongchang 2018.

Long-time rival Kelly Sildaru was the favourite for victory on that occasion before suffering her own untimely injury.

The Estonian, who won the first of her three Winter X Games slopestyle gold medals in 2016 at the age of just 13, will also be competing at Lausanne 2020.

"I know her pretty well - it’s part of the excitement, part of the whole thing to meet all my competitors again," Burmansson said of Sildaru.

Lausanne 2020 is due to take place from January 9 to 22.
