Defending champions Canada held off a resilient Finland to make it two wins out of two in Group A at the International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women's World Championship in Bratislava.

Charlotte Kettyle's goal in the third period was the catalyst for a 4-1 win for the Canadian side at Vlado Dzurilla – Hall 1.

Maddi Wheeler scored later in the third period with a wrist shot that went in just under the crossbar.

Finland pulled its goaltender, Aino Laitinen, with more than six minutes to play to try to get back into the game, but Canada's Emilie Lussier scored Canada's fourth and final goal into an empty net on a great cross-ice pass from Sarah Wozniewicz.

Victory for Canada follows a 3-2 overtime win over Russia yesterday.

"It was the best feeling ever," Kettyle said.

"When I saw it go in, I jumped up and I honestly couldn’t believe it, I was just speechless.

"The puck came up between (Kendall Cooper) and I, and I got over onto the right side, noticed the gap and went for it."

She added: "It’s been an incredible feeling so far.

"I’ve never experienced anything like this team in my life, and it’s something that you never want to end."

Canada had earlier opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game, when Lindsay Bochna's snap shot from the left circle beat Laitinen.

Nelli Laitinen scored from the point to draw Finland level, but it proved to be her country's only goal as they suffered a second consecutive loss.

Today's other match in Group A saw the United States join Canada in maintaining their perfect start with a 1-0 win over Russia.

In Group B, Czech Republic bounced back from their overtime loss against Switzerland yesterday to beat Sweden 3-1.

Slovakia, who lost to Sweden in yesterday's other Group B match, recovered to defeat Switzerland 3-2 after overtime.

Action is due to resume on Sunday (December 29) following a rest day tomorrow.
