Sweden claimed a 3-2 overtime win over defending champions Finland on day one of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic.

Alexander Holtz scored the winner with five seconds left in the Group A match at the Werk Arena in Třinec.

Team-mates Nils Hoglander and Samuel Fagemo both scored equalisers in normal time after Patrik Puistola and Kristian Tanus had put Finland into the lead.

The result extends the Swedes' record-setting preliminary-round winning streak to 49 games.

Today's other match in Group A saw Switzerland beat Kazakhstan 5-3.

In Group B, Czech Republic defeated Russia 4-3 before 17-time champions Canada claimed a last-gasp 6-4 win over last year's runners-up the United States at the Ostravar Aréna in Ostrava.

Action is due to continue tomorrow.

Slovakia face Kazakhstan in Group A prior to Germany meeting the US in Group B.
