The World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series is set to take place in Chinese city Wuxi over the coming three days, bringing an end to the 2019 season.

Action at the Wuxi Taihu International Expo Centre is due to run through to Friday (December 20), with competition in each of the four male and four female Olympic weight categories.

Among the athletes set to compete is the Philippines' Pauline Lopez, the women's under-57 kilograms gold medallist at her home Southeast Asian Games earlier this month.

Lopez already has one eye on next year's Asian Qualification Tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

That event, scheduled for April 10 and 11, will also be hosted by Wuxi.

"That (the World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series) is the stepping stone for the next goal - the Olympic qualifying," Lopez was reported as saying by the BusinessMirror.

The 2019 edition will be the third staging of the World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series, which first took place in 2017 and has been held in Wuxi every year.

Last year, winners received cash prizes of $70,000 (£53,000/€63,000), runners-up won $20,000 (£15,000/€18,000) and bronze medallists earned $5,000 (£4,000/€4,500), making the event the richest in World Taekwondo's portfolio.
