The journey to next year's Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne has gathered pace with the first of the qualification races taking place at the Omega Youth Monobob and Skeleton Series in Lillehammer in Norway.

In the skeleton races, a total of 40 youngster - 22 women and 18 men - from 15 nations competed at the Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track, which hosted the sport at the last Winter Youth Olympic Games in this Norwegian town four years ago. 

After the first two races of the women's event, two-times winner Josefa Schellmoser of Germany leads in front of Russia's Anastasia Tsyganova and Zhao Dan from China. 

Germany's Lukas Nydegger leads the overall standings in the men's competition ahead of Latvia's Elvis Weinbergs and Russia's
Dmitry Knysh, after winning both races.

Romanian Georgeta Popescu currently heads the girls' monobob standings after the first two races.

She leads Slovakia's Viktoria Cernanska after both won a race each.

Germany's Celine Harms is currently third. 

Fabian Gisler of Switzerland out in front in the boys' monobob category after taking gold and silver in Norway.

He is currently ahead of Romania's Andrej Nica and Germany's Alexander Czudaj.

The Omega Youth Series features eight races on four different tracks.

Four of those races taking place in North America.

Only four results count towards the qualification process.

The next round is due to take place in Königssee in Germany between November 7 and 9.
