Paik Sang-hoon scored the fifth fastest goal in the history of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup as South Korea beat Chile to secure their place in the last 16 of the tournament in Brazil.

Paik found the net 51 seconds into the Group C encounter at Estádio Kléber Andrade in Cariacica to set the tone for his side's 2-1 win.

Hong Sung-wook doubled South Korea's advantage on the half hour before Alexander Oroz reduced the deficit for Chile.

Although the South American team failed to find an equaliser, Oroz's goal proved crucial as it helped Chile qualify for the knockout stage as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Chile and the Netherlands finished the group stage with an identical record after the Dutch team beat the United States 4-0 in Group D.

Another goal for the Netherlands would have sent them through but instead they will have to wait until the group stage concludes tomorrow to see if they have done enough.

Chile progressed by virtue of the fair play tie-breaker after they ended the group phase level on points, goals scored, goals conceded and goal difference.

France topped Group C following a 2-0 win over Haiti at Estádio da Serrinha in Goiânia to complete the opening phase with a 100 per cent record.

In the other match in Group D, Japan leapfrogged Senegal into top spot with a 1-0 victory against the African side, which came courtesy of a Jun Nishikawa goal seven minutes from time.

The tournament continues tomorrow.
