Puerto Rico overwhelmed Suriname in their first match of Group C at the Confederation of North America, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship.

Playing in front of a home crowd at the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium in Bayamón, Puerto Rico defeated their opponents 6-1.

It was Suriname's second loss of the tournament, having also been beaten by Haiti.

Puerto Rico and Haiti now sit on top of Group C with three points each.

With Dominica and Grenada withdrawing from competition, there is only the match between the top two teams left to play to determine the group winner.

This is due to take place on Monday (September 7).

The group had been relocated earlier this week because of concerns over player safety.

Haiti was due to play host, however, violent protests between police and anti-Government protesters led to CONCACAF opting to move the fixtures.

Competition in Group A and B is scheduled to continue tomorrow.

Each group winner will progress to CONCACAF's Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship, with the dates and location for the finals still to be confirmed.

Canada, Mexico and the United States have already qualified for the finals.
