Back-to-back defending champions Italy brushed aside Puerto Rico in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals of the International Volleyball Federation Girls' Under-18 World Championship in Egypt.

The top seeds have not lost a match in 2019 and recorded a 25-12, 25-18, 25-21 victory on a day which saw all of the last-16 matches played.

Oghosasere Loveth Omoruyi led the way for Italy, the Pool B winners, with 12 points as they continued their bid for a third title in a row.

All but two of the eight matches played today in Cairo and Ismailia were decided in straight sets, with the losing sides managing just two sets between them.

Pool A table-toppers China defeated South Korea 3-0 but the match was much closer than the scoreline suggests.

The Chinese, the four-time record winners of the tournament, eventually came through 27-25, 27-25, 26-24.

Second seeds Russia, the Pool C winners and two-time champions, needed four sets to beat Bulgaria 25-17, 25-20, 15-25, 25-16.

Pool D winners Japan knocked out Thailand 25-19, 25-18, 25-19.

Hosts Egypt saw their tournament end as they were beaten 25-13, 27-25, 25-17 by United States.

Fourth seeds Turkey, who only crept through the pool phase in third place, fell 25-18, 25-16, 25-20 to Romania.

Argentina, who booked their place in the knockout rounds during the last round of group fixtures, lost an all South American duel to Peru, 16-25, 25-15, 25-22, 26-24.

Three-time winners Brazil secured their progression by seeing off Canada 25-21, 25-18, 25-19.

The quarter-finals will now be played on Thursday (September 12) after a rest day tomorrow.

Italy take on Peru, with China playing Romania in the bottom half of the draw.

Brazil will meet Russia, while the US collide with Japan.
