Australia took revenge on Japan to win gold at the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation Asia-Oceania Championships in Gangneung.

The reigning Paralympic gold medallists claimed a 57-55 victory in the final in South Korea on a day which saw New Zealand clinch a spot at Tokyo 2020.

Japan beat Australia 70-65 after four overtime periods as the final round-robin fixtures were played yesterday.

It meant they advanced straight into today's final while the Australians needed to negotiate a play-off against New Zealand to seal their spot.

Going the long way round did not matter as Australia won the final against the side who beat them to World Championship gold on home soil in Sydney last year.

The two nations are developing a strong rivalry which should come to the fore when Japan stages the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

New Zealand ensured that they will compete at the Games after beating hosts South Korea 50-43 for bronze.

With Japan and Australia already qualified for Tokyo 2020 the next-best performer in Gangneung knew that they would also book their place.
