Former world champion Jean-Luc Rougé has been re-elected general secretary of the International Judo Federation (IJF) at the world governing body's Congress.

The Frenchman was chosen to continue in his post along with the United Arab Emirates' Naser Al Tamimi, who was re-elected on the eve of the IJF World Championships in Japan's capital.

Both were voted unanimously to continue in their roles by the 123 Member Associations.

Marius Vizer had been re-elected as IJF President for a fourth term at the last Congress in Budapest two years ago.

His latest mandate is due to last until 2021.

It will be Rougé's third term, having first been been elected at the IJF Congress in Paris in 2011 when he succeeded Hungary's Hedi Dhouib, who had held the position for 18 years.

Rougé was crowned world champion in the under-93 kilograms category at Vienna in 1975.

Four years later, at the IJF World Championships in Paris, he won a silver medal in the under-93kg and bronze in the open category.

Al Tamimi, a former international basketball player with the UAE, has been IJF treasurer since 2007.

The Congress also heard a report from Yasuhiro Yamashita, President of the All Japan Judo Federation, on preparations for the IJF World Championships set to start here on Sunday (August 25).

Yamashita, the 1984 Olympic open gold medallist, was recently elected President of the Japanese Olympic Committee following the resignation of Tsunekazu Takeda, after he was implicated in a corruption scandal linked to Tokyo's successful bid for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"The venue hosting the competition is legendary as the Nippon Budokan was built for the 1964 Olympics where judo appeared on the Olympic programme for the first time," Yamashita told delegates.

"Next year at the 2020 Olympic Games the venue will host the Olympic judo tournament again, a great significance for our judokas."
