The ticket lottery for next year's Paralympic Games in Tokyo has been officially launched in the Japanese capital.

Japanese residents can apply for tickets until September 9 at 11:59am, with prices ranging from ¥900 (£7/$8.50/€7.60) to ¥7,000 (£54/$66/€59) as Tokyo 2020 organisers seek to enhance a family atmosphere at the Games.

Almost 2.3 million tickets are available in lottery, with tickets for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies ranging in price from ¥8,000 (£7/$8.50/€7.60) to ¥150,000 (£62/$75/€68).

The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee has taken steps to ensure better website traffic management after fans rushed to snap up tickets to the Olympic Games earlier this year.

In the first Olympic ticket lottery 3.2 million tickets were sold, with another 4.5 million website visits recorded for the second lottery earlier this month.

Head of ticketing at Tokyo 2020 Hidenor Suzuki told Kyodo News: "We've done a lot to ease internet traffic congestion."

Ballot applicants will be required to complete the Tokyo 2020 ID registration procedure, and those who signed up for Olympic tickets can use the same ID.

People can apply for up to 30 tickets as their first choice and another 30 as their second choice, but can only purchase a maximum of 30.

Those successful will be told by October 2, with payment due by October 15.

People outside of Japan cannot enter and must buy tickets through their country's authorised resellers.

Another lottery is due in early 2020 before a first come, first served process in the spring.

The online ticket lottery is available here.

The Paralympics take place between August 25 to September 6, 2020.
