Niccolo Nordera and Anja Von Allmen are on top after the first day of the Laser 4.7 Youth World Championships finals in Kingston.

The top 59 boys sailors have moved into the gold fleet to sail for medal positions at the Canadian city's Portsmouth Olympic Harbour.

The 63 female competitors are also into the final stages, with two more days of sailing scheduled before the youth world champion is crowned on Friday.

Italian Nordera still leads the men's standings, despite finishing 12th in today's first race - as that is his weakest result so far, it will be cut from his final score unless he has another poor finish.

Nordera recovered to finish second in the eighth race of the championship so far, leaving him with a net score of 17 points.

Croatia's Roko Stipanovic is second with 24 points, while Gasper Strahovnik of Slovenia has 39 points in third.

In the girls' fleet, Swiss Von Allmen continued her consistent performances with second and third place finishes today.

She leads with a net score of 32 points - despite not yet winning an individual race - while Marilena Makri of Cyprus and Italian Sara Savelli are second and third on 40 and 45 points respectively.

Action continues in Kingston tomorrow.
