Turkish archer Mete Gazoz topped the qualification rankings in the men's recurve as the World Archery Youth Championships began in Madrid.

Ranked as world number five in the senior ranks, the 20-year-old is yet to win a youth world title.

He began his campaign at the Zona Sur University Sports Complex by scoring 674 points in qualifying, with Chinese Taipei's Yu-Cheng Deng in second place on 667 points.

Britain's Alexander Wise sits in third place with a score of 659 points.

Jang Min-hee leads the women's recurve rankings at the end of qualification.

She top scored with 662 points as Germany's Elisa Tartler in second place on 648 points.

Jang's compatriot Lee Gah-yun is third on 642 points.

Norwegian Anders Faugstad took compound silver at this year's World Archery Championships in s'-Hertogenbosch and got his junior title campaign off to the perfect start in the Spanish capital.

Faugstad leads the men's junior compound rankings after amassing 707 points in the qualification round.

Estonia's Robin Jaatma was only three points behind on 704 points.

Sharp shooting from Sergio Shenkorov saw him place third at the end of the first day on 700 points.

Just three points separated the women's compound top three.

Ella Gibson of Britain leads on 693 points from Turkey's Ipek Tomruk on 692 and Alexis Ruiz from the United States on 691 points in second and third respectively.

Faugstad and seventh-seeded woman Sunniva Lislevand totalled 1,395 out of a possible 1,440 points as Norway matched the compound junior mixed team world record.

That score was only set recently at the European Grand Prix in Bucharest, Romania, by Estonian pair Robin and Lisell Jaatma.
