Jan Fransoo has been re-elected for a fifth four-year term as President of the International Korfball Federation (IKF).

The Dutchman had announced six months ago that he intended to retire but was persuaded to stand again by the IKF's Nomination Committee.

Described as an "urgent request", Fransoo's continuation has been agreed to give the Nomination Committee time to identify a "consensus candidate" to replace him.

Fransoo will definitely not continue beyond 2023 as a statue change has been brought in to limit the number of terms a member of the IKF Council may serve.

First elected in 2003, the Dutchman's new term will take him up to 20 years in charge.

His election was confirmed at the IKF's General Meeting in South African city Durban where other major decisions were made.

The 2023 World Championship in the mixed-gender sport has been awarded to Taipei in Taiwan, while The Netherlands will stage the 2027 edition in Rotterdam.

The bid from the Dutch, where the sport originated, had initially been for 2023 but officials agreed to stage the later event.

It will return the tournament to The Netherlands, who have triumphed at 10 out of the 11 World Championships held, for the first time since 2003.

The Czech Republic also bid unsuccessfully for the 2023 tournament but have received the consolation prize of hosting the 2022 European Championships.

Other decisions saw Belgium's Danielle Ruts elected for a final term on the IKF Council and promoted to the role of senior vice president.

She replaces Frank Walvis who did not stand again after three terms, and has now been given honorary membership.

Dutchwoman Anita Derks was elected to the Council as a member of the Executive Committee, ensuring the body is now gender-equal.
