Italy's Elia Viviani has added the European Cycling Union men's road race title to his Olympic omnium gold medal after beating Belgium’s Yves Lampaert in sprint finish in Alkmaar.

The 172.6 kilometres race concluded the Championships in The Netherlands, with Italian Viviani just holding off Lampaert.

Germany's Pascal Ackermann, who had left the Tour de Pologne to prepare for this race, finished  third.

High winds made the conditions difficult early on but the favourites, including Viviani and Ackermann, managed to make the front group unscathed, along with last year's winner, Italy's Matteo Trentin.

It was Viviani, Ackermann and Lampaert who went out ahead with 25km to go and with 10km remaining still had a 38 second gap to the peloton.

Lampaert attacked first only for Viviani to respond and take the lead.

The Belgian attempted another move in the final few hundred metres but the Italian had more than enough to hold him off.

Viviani crossed the line in a winning time of 3 hours 30min 52sec to keep the men's road race title in Italy following Trentin's triumph last year.

Lampaert took the silver medal a second further back, with Ackermann winning the bronze in 3:30:58.

Trentin was part of a group who finished 33 seconds behind Viviani, alongside the likes of Ireland's Sam Bennett and Luza Mezgec of Slovenia.

Viviani's gold medal was the fourth for Italy at the Championships, following Andrea Piccolo in the men's junior time trial, Letizia Paternoster in the under-23 women's road race and Alberto Dainese in the men's under-23 road race.
