Reigning champions Germany lead the European Athletics Team Championships standings after winning both finals on the opening day of competition in Bydgoszcz in Poland.

Claudine Vita got the Championships off to a perfect start for the German team at Zawisza Stadium with the maximum 12 points for winning the women's discus final.

Vita threw 61.09 metres as Mélina Robert-Michon of France finished second, throwing 60.61m and earning 11 points for her country.

Hrisoúla Anagnostopoúlou set a season's best of 59.02m in third place as she secured eight points for Greece.

The other final of the night, the men's javelin, was won by Germany's Julian Weber.

Weber recorded a season's best with his first attempt as he launched the javelin to 86.86m and 12 points for Germany.

Jakub Vadlejch earned 11 points for the Czech Republic in second place by throwing 79.88m.

Poland's Marcin Krukowski threw 79.54m to take third place and 10 points.

With just two of 40 events complete, Germany have the maximum 24 points with hosts Poland in second place on 19 points.

Finland are in third position on 16 points.

Due to a reorganisation of the European Team Championships from 2021, the Super League is being streamlined to eight teams, meaning five of the 12 current nations will drop into the First League, replaced by just the winners of the second tier.

After two events Britain are bottom of the leaderboard on six points, while Switzerland, Sweden, Ukraine and Spain occupy the other relegation positions.

Competition continues tomorrow afternoon when 20 finals will be contested at the Zawisza Stadium.
