Gordon Benson led a British one-two to secure the gold medal in the men's race at the Sprint Triathlon European Championships in Kazan.

Benson, who arrived in the Russian city having claimed silver as part of the British mixed relay team at last weekend's World Triathlon Series in Edmonton, beat compatriot Sam Dickinson to the title.

The Baku 2015 European Games gold medallist edged out Dickinson in a sprint finish at the end of the race, which included a 750 metres swim, a 19.2 kilometres bike and a 5km run.

Benson crossed the line in 52min 03sec, just a second ahead of Dickinson, forced to settle for silver in 52:04.

Rostislav Pevtsov of Azerbaijan clocked 52:36 to secure the bronze medal.

Switzerland's Julie Derron added the European sprint title to the continental under-23 crown she won in Israel last year by winning the women's race.

Derron broke clear of the rest of the field in the running section of the event and crossed in 58:49 to top the podium.

The 22-year-old Swiss finished 22 seconds in front of nearest challenger Petra Kuříková of the Czech Republic, who earned the silver medal in 59:11.

Spain's Tamara Gomez Garrido won bronze medal after she clocked 59:23.
