The US Olympic and Paralympic Training Center will create conditions matching the weather in Tokyo to prepare athletes for the Olympic and Paralympic Games next year.

Finbarr Kirwan, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) vice president of summer sport performance, revealed the news during a press conference marking one year to go until Tokyo 2020.

The Training Center will help athletes learn how to perform in high humidity and control fluid intake.

"Our athletes should not underestimate their experiences internationally," Kirwan said.

"This will be challenging, but not unknown for us.

"We're working very closely with them."

Temperatures in Tokyo are expected to be high for next year's Games, with concerns rising last year after Japan endured a record heatwave with temperatures reaching 41.1 degrees Celsius.

This prompted the International Olympic Committee and Tokyo 2020 to produce a 38-page guide outlining the measures they are taking to mitigate the potential risks from the heat.

In order to prepare for the Paralympics, American athletes will be using US military bases in Japan during the build-up to the competition.

The initiative is being organised in collaboration with the United States Department of Defence.

"That's a unique set-up that clearly gives us a little bit of a home-court advantage in terms of being on a US base surrounded by other Americans with top-notch facilities and group-support services, whether those are medical facilities, dining facilities, other things to best prep our athletes," said Julie Dussliere, the USOPC chief of Paralympic sport.

A number of test events have been held in Tokyo over the past month, with more scheduled until May as part of the "Ready Steady Tokyo" series.

"We're getting great feedback on the venues," said Kirwan.

"The venues are progressing very well.

"The organisation of the event is at a very high level.

"I think the preparation that has been done in advance of these test events has served our athletes very well.

"We're very confident that the test events themselves are a reflection of what we can anticipate in Tokyo."

USOPC are hosting a number of other promotional activities this week to celebrate one year to go until Tokyo 2020.

American TV channel NBC will mark the occasion on their TODAY programme, which will include sport demonstrations and athlete interviews.

Colorado Springs will host a one-year countdown celebration, while athlete community outreach activities will take place in Tokyo.

The Olympic Games are set to begin on July 24 next year, concluding on August 9.

They will be followed by the Paralympics from August 25 to September 6.
