Top seed Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland lost a hard-fought battle in the final of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Russian Open in Vladivostock as she was beaten by Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu-po.

The European Games and twice European Championships and Commonwealth Games silver medallist won the first game 21-9 but her opponent, seeded seventh, took the next two 21-19, 21-19 to earn the top prize of $5,625 (£4,499/€5,007)

In the men’s singles final at Sport Hall Olympik, second seed Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia defeated third seed Loh Kean Yew of Singapore 21-17, 21-19.

He also received $5,625 (£4,499/€5,007) in prize money.

India’s top seed Subhankar Dey had departed the competition in the third round at the hands of Japan’s Kodai Naraoka, who lost to Loh in yesterday’s semi-final.
