The online questionnaire ran between July 10 and 16 and was completed by cycling fans from 134 countries on five continents.

It was announced last month following a UCI Management Board meeting in Lavey-les-Bains in Switzerland that an "action plan" to improve road cycling had been approved.

Part of that process is the survey which allowed fans to give their opinions on the appeal of road cycling and their expectations for the future.

The poll proved most popular in the United States, France, Spain, Belgium and Italy with the United Kingdom, Germany, Colombia, Australia, Russia and Brazil also showing strong interest.

The UCI claimed issues that "may or may not make road cycling more enthralling" were covered in the survey.

Topics included the use of earpieces and power meters, team size and budgets, broadcasting, on-screen data and the format of events.

It was available in eight languages ‒ French, English, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese, German and Italian. 

"The consultation launched by the UCI to assess public opinion on the appeal of road cycling and expectations regarding its future gave all interested parties an opportunity, for the first time, to express their thoughts," said UCI President David Lappartient.

"The huge number of responses received gives cause for satisfaction and provides an excellent foundation which we can build on, together with all stakeholders, to make road cycling even more interesting and popular. 

"Thank you to everyone who has played their part in the ongoing modernisation of our sport."

As well as the survey, the UCI action plan will also see interviews take place with numerous stakeholders and an ad hoc working group set-up.

The group will feature riders, team representatives, organisers, broadcasters and members of the media.

It is hoped that following all of the feedback the UCI will be able to draw up a list of proposals that can be approved in 2020.

Everyone who completed the survey entered a prize draw to win a three-night stay for two people at this year's UCI Road World Championships in English county Yorkshire in September.

The winner will also receive access to a VIP hospitality lounge and a rainbow jersey signed by the 2019 world champions.
