Spain’s Liliana Fernández Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan beat third-seeded Americans Alexandra Klineman and April Ross in straight sets today to secure top spot in Pool C at the five-star International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach World Tour event in Gstaad in Switzerland.

The duo, seeded 19th, triumphed 21-15, 21-11 over the silver medallists from the recently-concluded FIVB Beach World Championships in Hamburg.

It followed a 21-11, 21-16 win yesterday against 14th-seeded Dutchwomen Joy Stubbe and Marleen Ramond-van Iersel at the Eisbahnareal venue.

In a pool-deciding match with Klineman and Ross exactly one year ago today, Fernández Steiner and Baquerizo McMillan lost out.

It was the only other FIVB World Tour meeting between the two teams.

"We played very well," Fernández Steiner said of today’s performance.

"We played them here a year ago today and they defeated us in pool play.

"So yes, it was some revenge.

"But that was not on our mind

"We just wanted to play good for the second straight day and we did."

Topping their pool means Fernández Steiner and Baquerizo McMillan will go straight through to the second round of the elimination stage.

Klineman and Ross had to settle for second place ahead of Stubbe and Ramond-van Iersel, who overcame Poland's Kinga Wojtasik and Katarzyna Kociolek 21-16, 21-23, 15-11 today.

In the men's event, 13th seeds Taylor Crabb and Jacob Gibb of the United States were among the pairs advancing from round one of the elimination stage.

They beat Canada's Grant O'Gorman and Ben Saxton 21-18, 19-21, 15-10 to set up a last-16 clash with defending champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway.

O'Gorman and Saxton had earlier defeated the ninth-seeded American pairing of Tri Bourne and Crabb's older brother Trevor, ensuring a third-place finish in Pool H and eliminating their opponents from the event.

They came from behind to prevail 21-23, 26-24, 15-8.

Mol and Sørum were not in action today having gone straight through to the last 16 as the winners of Pool A.

Action in Gstaad is due to continue tomorrow.
