Youngsters training at the Azraq Taekwondo Academy in Jordan’s capital Amman have earned black belts, while World Taekwondo has also opened up the facility to other sports.

To this end, deals have been signed with the International Judo Federation, the International Table Tennis Federation, United World Wrestling, the Badminton World Federation and the International Hockey Federation.

The THF used World Refugee Day to speak of its admiration for the Academy's athletes.

"Having all of the remarkable talents, the great skills and the amazing athletes in the Azraq Refugees Academy, we would like to mark this day and state how much we are proud of each and every single one you," a Facebook post reads.

"We see hope and great potential within your eyes, and we believe in a better and brighter future as long as you are strong enough to keep it there."

The THF has been a priority for World Taekwondo following a successful launch by President Chungwon Choue at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York City on September 21 in 2015.

Choue was speaking on the UN's International Day of Peace, an event first proposed in 1981 by his late father Choue Young-seek, who at the time headed the International Association of University Presidents General Assembly.

The THF was formally established in April 2016 in Lausanne.

Its aim is to send teams of taekwondo coaches to teach in refugee camps, helping refugees gain superior physical fitness, upgraded mental attitudes, self-defence, self-belief and self-respect.

Earlier this year, the THF released a video to celebrate the latest five students from the Azraq refugee camp to have become a 1st Dan Black Belt.

All five passed their test in March.
