A thunderous free-kick from Marco Ilaimaharitra clinched a historic victory for Madagascar as they defeated Burundi 1-0 in Alexandria to record a first-ever major tournament win.

Nicolas Dupuis' side remain unbeaten after two games as they make their debut at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

They will go into a Group B decider against Nigeria on Sunday full of confidence after they kept Burundi at bay at Alexandria Stadium.

Former France youth international Ilaimaharitra grabbed the winner on 76 minutes when he drilled over the wall and beyond Burundi keeper Jonathan Nahimana.

It could have been a more comfortable scoreline for the 108th-ranked side in the world but Nahimana kept out a Carolus Andriamahitsinoro free-kick.

Burundi, whose best chance was missed by Enock Sabumukama, sit bottom of the group with two defeats from two games.

Owing to Guinea's loss against Nigeria yesterday, Madagascar need just a point against the Super Eagles on Sunday to advance to the knockout stage.

Algeria booked their place in the last 16 with a narrow 1-0 win against Senegal.

The Desert Foxes took the lead four minutes after the break when Sofiane Feghouli cut back for Youcef Belaili, who took a deft touch and fired low into the net.

Sadio Mané's appeals for a Senegal penalty after being sandwiched by Adlene Guedioura and Ramy Bensebaini fell on deaf ears, with the Video Assistant Referee only due to be used from the quarter-finals onwards.

Algeria's Baghdad Bounedjah narrowly avoided volleying into his own net in added time and Mane headed over in the dying seconds but Algeria held on.

Kenya kept their hopes of reaching the last 16 with a 3-2 win against Tanzania.

Tanzania led 2-1 at the break thanks to goals from Saimon Msuva and Mbwana Samatta.

Michael Olunga had levelled at 1-1 after 39 minutes and he proved to be Kenya’s hero with a winning goal 10 minutes from time after Johanna Omolo had brought the game back to 2-2.

The win puts Kenya level on points with Senegal, who they play on Monday with the winners securing second place in Group C.
