Biathlete Tomas Kaukėnas fell out of a canoe, marathon runner Diana Lobačevskė was on horse back and Lithuania's Eurovision entrant Ieva Zasimauskaitė released a new song as part of the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee's (LNOC) official Olympic Day celebrations.

Panevėžys played host to a number of sporting challenges with more than 28,000 people getting involved.

At the end of a successful day, Panevėžys Mayor Rytis Mykolas Račkauskas, joked: "Only 28,000? It felt like 51,000 to me."

A free-of-charge participant passport challenge drew in 14,000 entries while another 3,500 people took on running, paddle boarding and scooter challenges.

The finals of the Lithuanian School Games attracted 500 pupils and LNOC President Daina Gudzinevičiūtė praised the uptake in support for the celebrations.

"The number of the Olympic Day participants has increased again," Gudzinevičiūtė, an Olympic shooting gold medallist in trap at Sydney 2000, said.

Gudzinevičiūtė added: "Today Olympic, non-Olympic and Paralympic sports were joined in a harmonious unity and gained lots of popularity.  

"Together with the residents of Panevėžys we managed to prove that we can achieve anything we want to."

Boxer Tadas Tamašauskas took up a challenge at the pavilion of Lithuanian wrestling as almost 30 Olympians got involved in the challenges.

Lithuanian Member of Parliament Gediminas Vasiliauskas demonstrated his skills of acroyoga and actor Marius Jampolskis participated in sitting volleyball.

Lithuania first marked Olympic Day in 1989, when Olympic champion Šarūnas Marčiulionis lit the Olympic Torch at the Gediminas Castle and sent it on a relay through the Baltic states until it reached Estonia. 

Next year's event is already being planned for Klaipėda and the day was concluded by Račkauskas handing over the Olympic Day flag to the assistant of Klaipėda's Mayor Arūnas Šulcas.
