Scotland's Gary Anderson and Peter Wright defeated Irish duo Steve Lennon and William O'Connor 3-1 to secure the Professional Darts Corporation World Cup of Darts title in Hamburg.

The Scots made it third time lucky after losing the 2015 and 2018 finals to England and the Netherlands, respectively.

They secured their berth with comfortable 2-0 wins against Belgium and Japan today as Anderson marked a successful return to action following treatment for a back injury.

Ireland had never got past the last 16 in eight attempts but today delivered 2-1 successes over Austria and defending champions the Netherlands – spearheaded by Michael van Gerwen – en route to the final.

The match against the Dutch went to a doubles decider but van Gerwen and Jermaine Wattimena were thumped 4-0 as Lennon came up with superb finishes of 131 and 128.

Lennon opened the final at Barclaycard Arena with a 4-2 win over Anderson.

Wright's 4-2 triumph over O'Connor saw the Scots level before a doubles whitewash moved them 2-1 up overall.

And Wright sealed the crown for Scotland when he defeated Lennon 4-1 in their singles tie to secure the £70,000 top prize, making Scotland only the third nation to win the event.

Elsewhere, New Zealand's run to a first quarter-final was ended when Cody Harris and Haupai Puha lost 2-0 to Japanese pair Seigo Asada and Haruki Muramatsu.

There was also a memorable 4-2 singles victory for Canadian youngster Dawson Murschell against van Gerwen.
