Jeongeun Lee6 emerged as number one at the United States Women's Open Championship with victory at the Country Club of Charleston, and became the United States Golf Association's first $1 million (£800,000/€900,000) women's winner.

Lee6 - so named because she was the sixth player with her name on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Korea tour - shot a one-under 70, to finish the weekend with an appropriate six-under par to claim the first Major of her career.

The 23-year-old South Korean did have a three-stroke lead with three to play, having been tied for the lead with France's Celine Boulter after the third round.

A birdie on the par-five 15th appeared to have all but gifted Lee6 the victory, but bogeys on the 16th and 18th gave Boutier a chance over the final two holes.

Boutier, however, missed a long birdie attempt on the 17th and put her approach to the par-four 18th in a bunker to hand the South Korean victory.

Lee6, playing two groups ahead of Boutier, had been practicing her putts just in case the French player managed to draw level and force a play-off.

Boutier double bogeyed the final hole, though, leaving her down in fifth place.

Lee6, who already has a South Korean fan club called "Lucky Six" and embraces her unusual name by having the number written on her golf balls, took home the biggest prize pot ever offered at a women's Major.

America's Lexi Thompson, South Korea's 2011 U.S. Women's Open winner So Yeon Ryu and another US player, Angel Yin, tied for second, two shots behind Lee6.
