History was made for sambo in Hungary when the first Budapest International Grand Prix was staged.

The tournament took place at MOM Sports Complex as part of a multi-sport event alongside the European Bodybuilding Championship.

Hungarian sambo clubs competed against two invited groups, Kuzury gym-Nitra from Slovakia and Moscow State University Club from Russia.

Imre Papp, President of the Hungarian Sambo Federation, said the championships were part of plans to grow the sport in the nation.

He said: "In October this year, we are going to stage the Budapest Open Sambo Championships for children, schoolchildren and cadets as part of the Fitparade multi-sport tournament.

"This is one of the most significant events in European fitness and children are the most important group whom we develop sambo in Hungary for."

Papp said that in future, the Grand Prix would be held in January or February as the curtain-raiser for the year's sambo competition in the country.
