The 24-year-old is currently in fourth position on the freestyle ladder, five points adrift of Ukraine's Oleksandr Titarenko and Greece's Dimitris Kyrsanidis, and 10 points behind current leader Evgenii Aroian of Russia.

Frenchman Tonnoir is hoping home support in Montpellier and a thrilling finale can give him a chance to claim a World Cup podium in an event that is part of the International Festival of Extreme Sports (FISE) World Series.

"I'm hoping for another medal in the last lap of this competition," he said. 

"My goal is to stay in the top five as long as possible, and look for a medal when the opportunity arises.

"It's always good to feel supported by your country, to feel a patriotic spirit in the sport."

Tonnoir, a freestyle specialist, will undoubtedly draw in the home crowds and is looking forward to the challenge of the speed-run event.

"The speed-run contest and the freestyle contest are very close, generally on the same day," he said. 

"I prefer to keep my energy for freestyle but in Montpellier, without jetlag, I hope to have the energy for both categories."

In the first World Cup event, Tonnoir crashed out in qualifying and hopes of a comeback in Hiroshima, were quashed when he missed out on the finals by 0.3 seconds.

Briton David Nelmes is gunning for Swiss traceur Christian Harmat's top spot in the speed-run rank after crashing out of the finals in Hiroshima.

However, Kyrsanidis will be aiming to put himself out of reach at the top of the men's overall rankings, having claimed three podiums for four events.

In the women's competition, Czech twins Adela and Vendula Měrková, part of a new cohort of National Federation contenders, are hoping to shake up the podium in Montpellier.

As the FISE World Series continued in Montpellier, 19-year-old Frenchman Giovanni Angelo wowed the crowds in the semi-finals of the skateboard street pro contest.

Accumulating 86 points to qualify for the final in first place, United States' Ke'Chaud Johnson had to settle for second on 83.50 with Japan's Sagawa Ryo third on 82.

In the women's skateboard street qualifiers, 10-year-old Daniela Terol Mendez blew the field away with a score of 90 points. 

Argentine duo Aldana Bertran and Melissa Ruiz were her closest rivals in second and third place respectively, some 19, and 21 points adrift.

The scooter freestyle park pro semi-finals saw Britain's Jamie Hull top the leaderboard ahead of compatriot Jayden Sharman.

Hull finished with 89 points, with Sharman 1.5 points adrift.

Australia's Dylan Morrison finished third with 83.60 points.
