Defending champions Heming Hu and Jian Fang Lay were in ominous form as the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Oceania Cup opened in Bora Bora.

Both Australians won their groups comfortably to book direct passage into tomorrow's semi-finals.

Hu whitewashed New Caledonia's Arthur Mas and New Zealand's Dean Shu 4-0 in group one of the men's tournament and also defeated French Polynesia's home player Ocean Belrose 4-1.

Jian did even better as she did not drop a game at the Salle de Réunion de la salle omnisport Pago Pago in women's group one.

The 46-year-old saw off French Polynesia's Cyrine Sam, Fiji's Grace Rosi Yee and New Zealand's Zhiying Cheng for the combined loss of just 25 points.

Group two in the men's event was won by New Zealand's Nathan Xu who beat Fiji's Vicky Wu and Vanuatu's Yoshua Singh 4-0 and Rohan Dhooria of Australia 4-2.

That earned him a semi-final spot with the second and third-place finishers given another chance to reach the last four through quarter-final ties.

Belrose kept home hopes alive by beating Singh 4-1 and will now meet Hu.

Dhooria also progressed by coming through against Shu 4-2, and has earned a tie with Xu.

Australia's Kathleen Paur won group two in the women's event to join compatriot Jian in the last four.

She beat New Zealand's Jiayi Zhou 4-0 alongside 4-1 wins over Sally Yee of Fiji and Melveen Richmond of French Polynesia.

In the quarter finals, Zhou came through against Grace Rosi Yee 4-0 and will now lock horns with Jian.

Cheng whitewashed Richmond 4-0 to earn a clash with Paur.

The semi-finals and the finals will take place tomorrow.

Both champions will book their place at the respective men's and women's ITTF World Cups in Chengdu as the Oceania representatives.

The women will play between October 18 and 20 with the men following between October 25 and 27.
