Colombia added two more golds on day two of the South American Athletics Championships in Lima, increasing to six their total with a final day of competition remaining.

In the renovated Villa Deportiva Nacional stadium that will host athletics at the 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games, Carlos Sanmartin and Melissa Gonzalez provided the victories that narrowed to two golds Brazil’s lead in the medal table.

Sanmartin earned victory in the men’s 3,000 metres steeplechase, where he won in 8min 36.37sec.

Silver went to Brazil’s Altobeli da Silva in 8:38.43, and bronze to Sanmartin’s team-mate Gerard Giroldo, who clocked 8:41.48.

Gonzalez added a second Colombian title on the day as she won the 400m hurdles in 55.73sec, with silver going to Panama’s Gianna Woodruff, timed at 56.76, and bronze to Argentina’s Fiorella Chiappe, who clocked 57.03.

The newly-adapted Villa Deportiva Nacional, one of the main venues within the remodelled VIDENA National Sports Complex in the San Luis District of Peru’s capital, boasts a Mondo track laid in March certified as a class one facility by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Brazil, which had won seven golds on the opening day of this Test event for Lima 2019, added a further title through Alison Santos.

Last year's bronze medallist at the IAAF World under-20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, won the men’s 400m hurdles in 49.88sec.

Silver went to Chile’s Alfredo Sepulveda, who clocked 50.03, and Argentina’s Guillermo Ruggeri took bronze in 50.20.

Karla Jaramilo of Ecuador won the women’s 20 kilometres track walk in 1hr 30min 52.00sec.

Silver went to Bolivia’s Angela Castro in 1:32:36.00 and bronze to home walker Leyde Guerra, who recorded 1:33:40.00.

Athletics will take place at Lima 2019 from July 28 to August 11.
