The Aerobic Gymnastics European Championships are under way in Baku after the junior qualification round began today. 

Gymnasts competed in the mixed pair, individual women and men, trios, groups and aero dance junior events at Baku’s National Gymnastics Arena.

The 2017 junior mixed pair European champion Daria Tikhonova dominated, topping the individual women's competition with 20.750 points.

The Russian also leads in the trio event alongside Aleksandra Merkulova and Ksenia Stefu after they achieved 20.200.

Her teammate Anton Kolobov posted the highest score of the day, 20.850, for his routine in the individual men’s round.

It was a successful day for Russia, the nation placing first in the group and the aero dance competition. 

Eight qualified from each category into the junior finals, taking place on Sunday (May 26).

The competition continues tomorrow with the start of the senior events.
