But the 29-year-old United States player certainly needed the record-breaking seven-shot lead he had taken into the final round at Bethpage State Park Black Course in New York.

After rounds of 63 and 65 on days one and two, Koepka carded a level-par 70 third time around, but nerves arrived on the final day as he recorded five bogeys in the last eight holes before finishing two shots clear of his nearest rival, compatriot Dustin Johnson.

“I am just glad we didn’t have to play any more holes,” Koepka told reporters.

“That was a stressful round of golf.

“The wind was up, DJ was awesome but I’m glad to have this trophy back in my hands.”

Koepka, the 2017 and 2018 US Open champion, has won four majors in the space of 23 months and is the world’s top-ranked player.
